Mark Guiliana | Masterclass at ICMP London

The good news keeps on coming for ICMP students, and especially our drummers – another great masterclass has been arranged, this time with the hugely influential drummer Mark Giuliana, who will visit us on 14th November 2017.

Mark will visit ICMP during his trip to London to perform at the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, providing students from our degree and diploma courses with the opportunity to learn from a player at the forefront of the top drummers in the world.

Who is Mark Guiliana?

Still in his early thirties, drummer/composer Mark Guiliana is fast-becoming the most influential drummer of the new jazz generation, particularly since his prowess, conceptual approach and unmistakable sound were recently featured on David Bowie’s final album release Blackstar. He is credited as creating an entirely new approach to drumming, and is known particularly for the way he blends virtuosic skills on acoustic drums alongside electronic elements and processing.

Why will this be such a great opportunity for ICMP students?

During the masterclass, Mark will talk to our students about his approach to drumming and composing as well as his experiences as a performer, session musician and band leader. You will be able not just to learn from his unparalleled skill as a player and performer, but also to ask questions about his career development and experiences. These have included recording and touring the world with artists including Brad Mehldau, Meshell Ndegeocello, Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen (bass), Matisyahu, Lionel Loueke, and his own groups, Beat Music and the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet.

ICMP BMus Programme Leader Rich Patterson expressed his excitement at the visit, stating that a masterclass from Mark would be:

considered unmissable by drum students and tutors alike."
