08 May 2012

Five Institute students, together with Paul Kirkham, Managing Director, and other members of the Institute staff, were invited to attend a discussion at the Houses of Parliament on April 5th on the subject of ‘Where are the musicians of the future coming from?’

This discussion was part of a meeting of All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Music Education, chaired by Diana Johnson MP, Vice-Chair of the APPG, Labour MP for Hull North and a former minister with responsibility for music education.

The debate focused on the music industry and education sectors, and considered whether we are training the musicians of the future in out higher education institutions, what support these musicians need, what support the industry provides and what can be done to provide pathways through to a professional music career in the UK.

In addition to Paul Kirkham, who had been invited to speak at the meeting, there was a panel consisting of Paul McManus, Chief Executive of Music Industries Association, Hester Cockroft, Chief Executive of Awards for Young Musicians, Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive of the BPI and a Governor of the BRIT school and Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and Chair of the Music Education Council. Institute students Andy Smith, Hattie Longfield, Ania Hardy, Sven Dupon, Carl Rennie were invited to ask questions and join in the debate, which was a unique and special experience for all involved!

Joelle makes it through despite tough song choice

03 May 2012

Current FdA vocal student Joelle Moses has continued to progress further as a contestant on BBC's the Voice despite the pressure of opening the show and a difficult song choice. She made it through to the second round of live shows last Saturday with a terrific rendition of Mary J Blige's 'I'm Going Down' undoubtedly the hardest song of the night.

Joelle said of her experience on the show so far;

'I’m having an amazing and life changing experience on the voice. Its incredibly hard work and very testing but I hope I am rising to the challenge! I guess Ill find out when I sing live again a week on Saturday. The main thing is that I’m learning a huge amount – especially from my mentor Will.i.am.

Obviously last week I was so relieved when Will picked me to carry on in the competition. Now I’m just praying that I can sing a great song for the public next week. In the meantime I’m enjoying the opportunity to sing live again tomorrow with Team Will.

Thank you to everyone at the Institute who has supported or voted for me so far. It means so much to have some home support – See you all very soon!
'

After being selected by judge Will.I.Am, Joelle is now preparing for her next performance and all of us at the Institute wish her the best of luck.
